Speak out against adoption discrimination

It’s time to tell our legislators that we stand against discrimination within the Georgia adoption and child placement system.

There’s a re-emerging threat to LGBTQ+ Georgians taking shape in the Georgia senate. Under the guise of religious freedom, the “Keep Faith in Adoption and Foster Care Act” (Senate Bill 375) will allow adoption agencies, even ones that receive state funds, to refuse to work with LGBTQ+ citizens or youth without penalty.

Update: The Senate passed this bill today (February 23), with Bill Cowsert and Frank Ginn both voting yes on it.

Although a recent overhaul to our adoption and foster system passed without this hateful language, our lawmakers are again trying to allow malicious discrimination that will hurt Georgians trying to create families and deny children a loving home. Codifying this discrimination is embarrassing and wrong, and we should support all Georgians’ right to adopt and foster children, regardless of belief or sexual orientation. You can read about the bill in more detail on Project Q Atlanta.

Personalized calls are more effective than multiple calls reading the same script, so express your personal feelings frankly! Here is an example script that you can build off of or use:

Hello,

My name is [NAME], calling from [CITY]. I’m calling today because I oppose allowing state-sanctioned discrimination against LGBTQ citizens wishing to adopt or foster. I want Georgia’s children to have every opportunity to find loving homes, including with LGBT families. Please take this opportunity to show that we as a state will not tolerate this kind of discrimination. Passing State Bill 375 will do nothing but hurt children, hurt families and hurt the state.

Thank you for the chance to share my concerns.

Feel free to modify the script, depending on whom you’re calling.

Please call them TODAY.

TELL THEM: No LGBTQ discrimination in adoption.

Thanks for caring,
