Let’s tell the House we want a vote on Medicaid expansion!
Reps. Deborah Gonzalez and Jonathan Wallace are co-sponsoring legislation to expand Medicaid, but it’s being held up in the House on the appropriations committee.
Let’s call Rep. Terry England (chair of that committee and the elected representative from Auburn, just down the road from Athens) and ask him to allow a vote by the whole House.
Crossover day is Wednesday, so this request is urgent! Any bill that does not receive a vote in its initial chamber by Day 30 cannot move on in the legislative process and must be re-introduced the following year.
Rep. Terry England, 116 (R) 404-463-2247
Make sure to tell your friends in other districts to call their state legislators, too. Don’t know who your legislator is? Find out here. You can also see a list of members of the appropriations committee here.
Medicaid expansion would provide insurance to approximately 500,000 Georgians who currently can’t afford it. These people fall into the gap created by the fact that Georgia refused to accept federal funds to expand Medicaid when the Affordable Care Act was passed. They make too much to qualify for Medicaid under the state’s current laws but too little to afford health insurance on their own.
House Bill 669, cosponsored by Athens Reps. Deborah Gonzalez and Jonathan Wallace, would accept those funds, adding $9 of investment by the federal government for every $1 the state invests. Georgia is currently the 41st healthiest state in the country and its ranking continues to fall, partly due to the fact that 13.4 percent of its population is uninsured. Closing the gap would only take 0.2 percent of the state’s budget over four years and would lead to economic growth as well as a healthier population.
Personalized calls are more effective than multiple calls reading the same script, so express your personal feelings frankly! Here is an example script that you can build off of or use:
My name is [NAME], calling from [CITY]. I’m calling today because I strongly support Medicaid expansion in Georgia, and I want to encourage the appropriations committee to bring it to a vote. Expanding Medicaid will make our whole state stronger and healthier, at a surprisingly low price.
Thank you for the chance to share my concerns.
Feel free to modify the script, depending on whom you’re calling.
Please call them TODAY.
TELL THEM: We want a vote on Medicaid expansion!
