Athens Transit Pushes for Hybrid Engine Buses

Athens for Everyone is very excited that Athens Transit is applying for a Go! Transit Grant to pay for 10 or more Hybrid-Engine buses.

Last year the General Assembly approved a transportation package that included grant funds for transportation projects that local municipalities could tap into in order to fund special projects, this grant fund became the Go! Transit Capital ProgramAthens Transit has created a grant proposal asking for funding to purchase 10 hybrid-engine buses to replace 10 of the diesel engine buses currently being used as they come offline. Moving to hybrid-engines will dramatically cut back on the amount of carbon dioxide emitted and the amount of fuel consumed.

Athens for Everyone strongly encourages the Athens-Clarke County Commission to pass the resolution as written by Athens Transit so this application can go forward and to allot matching funds to be used as part of the grant proposal.

Please click here to contact the Commission today and ask them to vote in favor of this item (item number 7) at the February 2 Mayor & Commission meeting.

You can read more about this in the Athens Banner-Herald opinion piece written by Athens for Everyone member and public transit advocate Loren Hansen.
