It’s time to tell our legislators we support public education in Georgia.
Call or email:
Make sure to tell your friends in other districts to call their state legislators, too. Don’t know who your legislators are? Find out here.
Once again, public education is under assault in the Georgia Capitol. SB 173 and HB 301 would create Georgia’s third private school voucher program and divert even more money from Georgia’s already grossly underfunded public education system to religious schools and homeschooling. Adding another voucher program is unnecessary and wasteful.
Moreover, our senators have barely had time to read their version of the bill, and no public testimony has been allowed on the issue. While some members of the Senate Finance Committee believe the bill will be “revenue neutral,” the house bill shows a potential additional cost of $270 million. It’s time to tell our senators we stand for public education in Georgia!
Are your legislators trying to tell you that school vouchers will actually increase the amount of dollars available for public education? That’s a common argument of “school choice” proponents. You can read this analysis in the Washington Post that explains why their analogies aren’t accurate.
Personalized calls are more effective than multiple calls reading the same script, so express your personal feelings frankly! Here is an example script
that you can build off of or use:
Hello, My name is [NAME], calling from [CITY]. I’m calling today because the Georgia senate/house is attempting to pass a bill that would create another private school voucher program. Georgia public education is already grossly underfunded, and this bill would further hurt our public education system by diverting more public funds to private school vouchers. I expect my representatives to be supporters of strong public education for all children, not work to undermine it.
[If calling senators: I’m troubled that our representatives would try to force a bill through the senate without careful consideration or taking the time to hear public comments on the matter from the people they were elected to represent.] I hope you will choose to support our public schools and vote no on SB 173/HB 301.
Thank you for the chance to share my concerns.
Feel free to modify the script, depending on whom you’re calling.
Please contact your legislators TODAY.
TELL THEM: Stop supporting vouchers!
Thanks for caring,
