Action Alert: Oppose the Forever War

It’s time to tell our legislators we oppose the Corker-Kaine Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) 2018!

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tennessee) and Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Virginia) have introduced S.J.Res.59, a bill that partially repeals AUMF 2001 and completely repeals AUMF 2002. Although its supporters argue that the bill will prevent Trump from unilaterally launching war against other nations, opponents say the bill gives the president the authority to wage war against individuals, groups and countries forever. The ACLU says, “The result will be true global war without end.” The bill still needs to pass both the federal House and Senate, which means we have time to stop it.

Sen. David Perdue: (202) 224-3521
District 10 Rep. Jody Hice: (202) 225-4101
District 9 Rep. Doug Collins: (202) 225-9893

Supporters of S.J.Res.59 say that it restricts Trump’s ability to bring the country to war without the approval of Congress, but that’s not true. The ACLU cites a few of the major problems with this bill:

1) It immediately authorizes war against eight groups in six countries, which could lead to the speedy deployment of tens or hundreds of thousands of soldiers.

2) It allows the president to declare war on an individual. It also allows the president to add individuals or groups to the list of war-approved individuals, groups and countries with a simple note to Congress — without explanation.

3) It takes from Congress the power to declare war (as defined in the Constitution) and gives it to the president. In order for Congress to stop the president, they would have to pass a bill ordering the president not to go to war, which could still be vetoed by the president unless it has a two-thirds majority. In other words, the president could go to war with anyone at any time without congressional approval.

Personalized calls are more effective than multiple calls reading the same script, so express your personal feelings frankly! Here is an example script that you can build off of or use:

My name is [NAME], calling from [CITY]. I’m calling today because I oppose the Corker-Kaine AUMF bill. This bill will not restrict Trump’s ability to declare war without approval of Congress. Instead, it will allow Trump to wage war unilaterally on individuals, groups and countries and could potentially lead us to endless global war.

Thank you for the chance to share my concerns.

Please call your senators and representatives TODAY.

TELL THEM: We oppose Corker-Kaine AUMF!
