Fee on Single-Use Plastic Bags

What we want:

A five or ten cent fee on single-use plastic bags.

The benefits:

  1. A cleaner environment. The production, transportation, litter, and disposal of single-use plastic bags harms our environment by contributing to climate change, cluttering our natural spaces, and releasing toxic chemicals into our land and water. A bag fee reduces use by more than 80% where implemented, thereby greatly reducing all these harmful effects.
  2. Reduced costs for the ACC Solid Waste department. Plastic bags clog our recycling system and landfill, costing taxpayers money.

The political situation:

Several ACC Commissioners support a single-use plastic bag fee. The mayor is opposed. Now we and our allies on the commission need to make the case publicly, forcing Mayor Denson to put it on the agenda and up for a vote.
