What we want:
Prohibit single-use plastic bags from retail and grocery stores. Distribute reusable bags at no cost to all who need them.
- A cleaner environment. The production, transportation, litter, and disposal of single-use plastic bags harms our environment by contributing to climate change, cluttering our natural spaces, and releasing toxic chemicals into our land and water. A bag fee reduces use by more than 80% where implemented, thereby greatly reducing all these harmful effects.
- Reduced costs for the ACC Solid Waste department. Plastic bags clog our recycling system and landfill, costing taxpayers money.
The political situation:
Several ACC Commissioners support a single-use plastic bag ban. The mayor is opposed. Now we and our allies on the commission need to make the case publicly, forcing Mayor Denson to put it on the agenda and up for a vote.
