Athens for Everyone endorses Democrat Jonathan Wallace for State House District 119 in the November 7th Special Election to replace Chuck Williams.
A4E member Jonathan Wallace has formulated a people-first progressive platform to refocus our state government’s priorities.
Jonathan is running to fully fund our schools, because he recognizes that every school in Georgia should be as good as the best school in Georgia. He’s fighting to expand Medicaid, because he recognizes that healthcare is a human right and that no one should suffer unnecessary illness, go bankrupt, or die because of a lack of insurance. He’ll fight for a $15/hour minimum wage, because our workers need it, they deserve it, and it’s high time they get it. He’ll work to repeal Campus Carry, because he’s got common sense. And Jonathan’s passionate about working to end gerrymandering with an independent redistricting commission, because voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around. This is a platform worth fighting for!
We strongly urge Jonathan to move quickly to take bold policy stances to address the severe racial inequality in our state, the continuing crisis of mass incarceration, and the need to protect Georgia’s immigrant population from the federal government’s attacks. In that vein, we are heartened to see that he’s responded to our questionnaire by publicly stating his support for granting driver’s licenses to undocumented Georgians in order to help protect them from the web of detention and deportation, and for addressing the racist system of mass incarceration by eliminating mandatory minimum sentences and legalizing marijuana.
We’re confident that Jonathan will take the same hard work he’s showing on the campaign trail with him to the State House to fight for real change on behalf of and alongside people in Athens and across Georgia. We can build a Georgia that works for everyone, and electing Jonathan Wallace in District 119 will get us closer to that transformative majority. We’re going to do our part to make it happen. Let’s elect Jonathan Wallace!
